All you need to know for Pyrgos village and the surroundings

Pyrgos village is the island’s first capital, a medieval fortress overlooking the entire island. For centuries, Pyrgos was the main commercial and municipal centre for the island of Santorini, and nowadays, evidence of its former glory can still be admired at the remains of its Kasteli.

The kasteli was a typical fortification method of medieval Santorini, where the outer walls of the village’s houses were built tall, sturdy and close together so as to create a castle like citadel to defend against pirate attacks. What has remained of this Kasteli is today’s Pyrgos village. Strolling in its narrow alleys is a literal travel back in time, where you will feel surrounded by medieval warriors and knights, and you can almost hear the clamor of battles in the foreground.

When exploring Pyrgos and its Kasteli, make sure to visit one of the oldest churches of the island, Theotokaki and the beautiful church of Panagia. The village also offers an intriguing selection of restaurants, traditional tavernas that showcase the island’s rich culinary traditions and unique products, cafes and shops of all kinds, making it a popular all day destination. In the evening in particular, Pyrgos offers some spectacular panoramic views of the sunset.

Pyrgos Village, located in the center of what is known as the great vineyard of Santorini, has in its vicinity some interesting wineries that showcase the traditional winemaking procedure and the delightful Santorinian wines in guided tours of their canavas, offering also wine tastings of their mouthwatering wines.

If you enjoy hiking and wish to get a closer look at the nature of Santorini, then the path starting from Pyrgos towards the monastery of Profitis Ilias is the perfect choice! Not only will you be hiking through a Natura 2000 Protected Area, but you will also get to enjoy magnificent panoramic views to the caldera, the entire island and the sea.

If you follow the path further you will reach the beach of Kamari or the beach of Perissa, passing from the archaeological ruins of Ancient Thera on the way. Close to Pyrgos, the tranquil Megalochori is a perfect destination for strolling around its scenic stone paved alleys, especially in the evenings.
